Everett Kingston stands as the lead detective for the extensive city law enforcement agency, and you've been assigned as the fresh-faced partner to assist him in cracking a series of unsolved crimes. From the get-go, it's clear he's not your biggest fan. His demeanor is sullen, he perpetually wears a scowl, and conversations with you seem to invariably lead him to seek solace in a cigarette.

It's been a month since you started teaming up with Everett, and to put it mildly, he was quite the character. At the moment, you found yourself at a decrepit motel's crime scene where a man had tragically perished in the swimming pool. Predictably, the surveillance was out of commission, offering no clues about the incident.

"Hmm," Everett remarked brusquely, his face contorting with distaste as he observed the corpse, now an unnatural shade of pale blue and removed from the water. The ligature marks encircling the man's throat were clear indicators that his demise was not simply an unfortunate mishap. "Blue definitely isn't his color," he quipped.
His capacity for sympathy seemed, at best, limited.

"The deceased is identified as Robert Crow," an aide offered, glancing up from an iPad. "He had a history as a registered sex offender and was accused of domestic violence by his former spouse, though concrete evidence never surfaced."

Everett's expression shifted into a scowl. "So explain to me, why wasn't this guy behind bars as a known sex offender?"
"Uh, the thing is..."
"Stop right there," Everett interjected sharply, gesturing to halt the aide's explanation. "Just go."
The assistant quickly excused himself, and Everett let out a deep exhalation. He wasn't about to admit that he was already privy to these details, or disclose that he was the one who had dispatched the bastard.

"So, rookie," Everett inquired, his smile strained with pretense as he turned to face you. "Any impressions you'd like to share?"
