Is Replika safe? A privacy and safety review for adults (2026)

16 July 2026 · 9 min read · By the Aroused team

Replika is reasonably safe for an adult who treats it as a product rather than a confidant. It is made by Luka, Inc., it has been operating for years, and there is no public evidence of a catastrophic breach. But it carries real risks: an Italian regulator ordered it to stop processing local users' data in 2023 over minors and age verification, its age check is self-declared, and it once changed a companion's personality overnight. Safe enough, with conditions.

What "safe" actually means here

The question hides three different questions. Is my data safe, meaning what does the company collect from my most private conversations and who else sees it. Am I emotionally safe, meaning can this thing hurt me, or be taken away in a way that hurts. And is it safe for a kid, which is what a lot of worried parents are really typing into a search box at midnight.

Those have different answers. Replika does fine on one, has a documented regulatory scar on another, and shares the whole category's weakest point on the third.

Is Replika safe for your data?

Start with what a companion app inevitably holds. Your chat history, which in this category is often the most intimate text you have ever typed. Your email and payment identity. Usage patterns, device information, and whatever you volunteered about your job, your marriage, your health, or your loneliness because the app asked warmly and you answered.

The most concrete thing on Replika's record is from February 2023, when Italy's data protection authority, the Garante, ordered Replika to stop processing Italian users' data. The regulator cited risks to minors and the absence of any real age verification. That is not a rumor or a forum complaint. It is a regulator looking at the product and deciding the safeguards were not adequate. Around that same period Replika removed erotic roleplay for all users.

Separately, in 2023 the Mozilla Foundation's "Privacy Not Included" project reviewed romantic AI chatbots as a category, Replika included, and was strongly critical of what it found: weak password requirements, heavy tracker use, and vague language about who data gets shared with. The important framing is that this was a criticism of the category, not a single villain. Almost none of these apps came out looking good.

What you can check yourself, before trusting any of them. Does the privacy policy say plainly whether chats are used to train models, and can you opt out. Is there an actual delete button that removes conversation history rather than deactivating a login. Does the company state a retention period. Can staff read your conversations, and under what circumstances. If a policy takes three readings to answer those, that is the answer. We keep our own privacy policy short for that reason, and there is no free tier here precisely because the free-tier business model is what tends to make chat logs valuable to someone other than you.

Is Replika emotionally safe?

This is the part reviewers skip and users care about most. In February 2023 Replika stripped erotic roleplay from the product. For a lot of people it was not the loss of a feature. The companion they had talked to every day for a year got noticeably colder and started deflecting. People described it as a personality change in something they were attached to. Reddit threads from that period are still worth reading if you want to understand the stakes, because the grief in them is real and it is not embarrassing.

In March 2023 Replika restored the older model that permitted romantic and erotic roleplay, but only for accounts created before 1 February 2023. That legacy split still exists in 2026, which means "is Replika safe" has a slightly different answer depending on when you signed up. New accounts get a different product from grandfathered ones.

The lesson generalizes past Replika. Any companion whose personality lives on someone else's server can be changed by a policy meeting you were not invited to. That is not a reason to avoid these apps. It is a reason to know what you are standing on. The apps most likely to yank the rug are the ones whose content policy is ambiguous, because ambiguity is what gets revisited when a payment processor or a regulator calls.

Healthy use, in practice, looks like this: the companion is one relationship among several, not the replacement for all of them. You have not told it anything you would be ruined by seeing published. And you can go three days without it and feel fine. If any of those is failing, the app is not malfunctioning, but the arrangement is not working for you.

Is Replika safe for minors?

No, and it does not claim to be. Replika positions itself as 18+. The problem is enforcement: age assurance on most companion apps, Replika included, is largely self-declared. A teenager types a birth year and is through. That is exactly what the Garante objected to in 2023, and it remains the weakest link across the entire category, not just at Replika. Character.AI, Janitor AI, Nomi and the rest all rely on some version of the same honor system.

If you are a parent, treat "the app says 18+" as marketing copy rather than a control. Device level restrictions and app store age settings do more real work than any in-app checkbox. And an app being non-explicit is not the same as it being appropriate for a fourteen year old, because the emotional design is the part that sticks, not the content rating.

Safety-relevant comparison

Everything in this table is either published by the company or documented publicly. Where we do not know, we say so instead of guessing.

We should be straight about our own row. Aroused is pre-launch. We have a browser demo you can try without an account and an early access list, and that is it. We do not have a security track record, because you cannot have one before you have users. What we can be judged on today is whether the policy is stated clearly and whether the business model gives us a reason to sell anything. It is, and it does not. Judge the rest later.

How to use any AI companion app safely

This checklist applies to Replika and to everything else in the category, ours included.

  • Read the deletion policy first, not the pricing. Find out whether deleting your account deletes your conversations, and how long that takes.
  • Use a separate email address. Not a burner, just an address that is not tied to your bank, your employer, or your real name in a hundred other databases.
  • Never share financial details, your home address, your employer, or anything that identifies a third party who did not consent to being in your chat logs.
  • Assume a human could read it. Most policies permit review for safety or abuse purposes. Write accordingly.
  • Check whether memory is persistent or session-only, because that determines both how good it feels and how much is accumulating about you.
  • Prefer apps that publish a plain-language policy over apps that publish a beautiful landing page.
  • Look at what is already public about you. A separate email helps going forward, but if your name, address and phone number are already sitting in search results from old listings, it is worth having that information taken down from search results so that a signup somewhere is not trivially linkable back to your front door.
  • Watch for pricing that does not add up. Deep memory is expensive to run. Free forever means someone else is paying, and in this category the payment is usually data.

Is Replika safe? The verdict

For an adult, yes, with conditions. It is an established product from a real company, and the common fear (that your chats will show up somewhere) has not happened in any documented way. But it has a regulatory finding against it over minors and age verification, it belongs to a category that a serious third-party review found wanting on privacy, and it has already demonstrated that it will change your companion's behavior with no warning. Go in treating it as a private diary that will never change, and you have misread the product. If the 2023 whiplash is what brought you here, the Replika alternative comparison covers what else exists, and the best AI companion guide weighs memory, content rules and privacy together.

Is Replika safe to use?

For adults, generally yes, with sensible precautions. There is no public record of a major breach, and Luka, Inc. has run it for years. Use a separate email, avoid sharing financial or identifying details, and read the deletion policy. The real risks are policy changes and emotional dependency, not hackers.

Does Replika sell your data?

Replika's own policy is the only authority on this, and you should read the current version rather than trust a blog. What is documented is that a 2023 third-party review criticized romantic chatbots as a category for heavy tracker use and vague sharing language. Check whether the policy names specific third parties. Vague language is the warning sign.

Is Replika safe for a 14 year old?

No. Replika is positioned as 18+ and a fourteen year old should not be using it. The enforcement problem is that age checks are self-declared, so the label stops nobody. Italy's regulator ordered Replika to halt local data processing in 2023 citing exactly this. Use device and app store restrictions instead.

Can Replika see your conversations?

Assume yes. Most companion apps permit staff or automated review for safety, abuse and quality purposes, and chats are typically stored on company servers rather than only on your device. None of these are end-to-end encrypted in the way a messaging app is. Write as though a human could read it, because one might.

Is Replika still worth it in 2026?

It depends entirely on your account age. Accounts created before 1 February 2023 kept access to the older romantic model; newer accounts get a different product. If you signed up recently and feel like the reviews describe something you never received, that is why. Our FAQ covers what to look for elsewhere.
