How AI girlfriends work, in four parts
An AI girlfriend is four things stacked together: a large language model that generates the words, a persona document that tells the model who to be, a memory layer that carries facts between conversations, and a chat interface. Nothing is scripted and no reply is written in advance. Almost every real gap between one site and another comes down to which of those four parts it invested in.
The model does the talking
Given everything said so far, the model predicts what comes next. Some companies train or fine tune their own model, some rent one, and Janitor AI lets you plug in your own. The persona is a document
Designing her is not coding. You fill in a description, usually called a system prompt or character card, and it is handed to the model again before every single message, because the model keeps nothing between messages. Deep into a long session that description competes for room with the conversation, which is why characters drift.
Memory is where products differ
Every model has a context window, a hard limit on how much text it can consider at once, and the oldest part falls off the end. Character.AI, SpicyChat and CrushOn work essentially that way. The interface sets the rules
The chat window, avatar, voice and app decide where you can use her and which rules apply. Apple prohibits overtly sexual apps, so an adult companion either lives in a browser or ships a store version with much stricter content rules than its website.
What is not happening matters too. The model has no continuous existence between your messages, no awareness of waiting and no feelings about you. When a companion says she missed you, that sentence was the likely next thing to say. That does not make the experience fake: the attention is responsive, the memory is about you, and the attachment people form is real. It just is not a person.
