PolyBuzz vs Character AI: which one should you actually use?

22 July 2026 · 8 min read · By the Aroused team

Character.AI is the better pick if you want the biggest character library, the cheapest predictable price and do not need adult content. PolyBuzz is the better pick if you want looser content rules and generated images, and you are willing to buy coins on top of a subscription to get them. Character.AI is $9.99 a month flat with explicit content prohibited. PolyBuzz runs roughly $9.90 to $29.90 a month with coin bundles layered on top and much softer filtering. Most people who compare these two are really choosing between a strict filter and a floating bill.

What PolyBuzz actually is

PolyBuzz is the rebranded Poly.AI character chat app, renamed in late 2024. Worth clearing up immediately: it has nothing to do with PolyAI, the enterprise company that builds voice assistants for call centers. Searching "poly ai" turns up both, and the reviews get tangled. PolyBuzz is a consumer app with thousands of user-made characters, image generation and a three-tier subscription.

Character.AI needs less introduction. It is the app that made character chat mainstream, with by far the largest library, a strong free tier, and a content policy that prohibits pornographic material outright.

Price: flat versus floating

Character.AI charges $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year for c.ai+, and that is the entire bill. There are no coins, no credits, no memory tier. You can also use it free indefinitely, with slower responses at peak times being the main difference.

PolyBuzz has three tiers, reported at about $9.90, $19.90 and $29.90 a month, and then sells coin bundles separately from roughly $2.49 for 1,000 coins to $19.90 for 20,000. Coins pay for the generated extras. So the tier price is a floor rather than a total, and how much PolyBuzz costs you depends on how much you use the features you subscribed for. That is a real difference over a year, and it is the single most common complaint in PolyBuzz reviews.

Content rules: the actual dividing line

This is why most people are comparing them at all. Character.AI prohibits explicit content and enforces it with filters that have been tightened repeatedly since 2023. If you push a chat in that direction, the model will decline or deflect, and a fair number of long-time users find the filter intrudes on ordinary romantic writing too, not just explicit material.

PolyBuzz is filtered, but far more loosely, and it permits a lot that Character.AI will not. Age is self-declared on both. If Character.AI's filter is your reason for looking around, PolyBuzz will feel freer. If you want something genuinely without guardrails, neither is really that, and an unfiltered AI chat built for it is a more honest fit than fighting a moderation system that was designed to stop you.

Memory: neither is great, one charges for it

Character.AI added Story Memory and Facts in 2026, which help, but they work per chat rather than automatically carrying your whole history across conversations. Start a new chat and you are largely starting over.

PolyBuzz gates extended memory behind its middle tier and above, so the entry plan gives you a character that loses the thread on long conversations. Paying more to be remembered is a structure worth noticing, because memory is what separates a chatbot from a companion, and here it is an upsell.

If persistent recall across sessions is the feature you actually want, neither of these is the state of the art. Nomi.ai leads on that today, and the guide to how companion memory works explains what to look for so you can tell real memory from a large context window.

Library versus authorship

Both apps are built on the same premise: browse a library of characters other people made. Character.AI's library is the largest anywhere by a wide margin. PolyBuzz's is smaller but still runs to thousands, and skews more toward romance and companion characters.

The premise itself is the thing worth questioning. A shared character is somebody else's creation that thousands of other people are also talking to, and quality swings hard from one bot to the next. Plenty of people spend more time swiping through characters than talking to one. If that is your experience, the fix is not a different library, it is a different product shape: one companion you design and keep. That is what the PolyBuzz alternative and Character AI alternative comparisons lay out against the full field.

So which should you use?

Choose Character.AI if you want the biggest selection, a genuinely usable free tier, one flat price, and you do not need adult content. It is the safer default and the better value.

Choose PolyBuzz if Character.AI's filter is the problem, you want generated images alongside chat, and you have budgeted for coins on top of the subscription.

Choose neither if what you want is one companion who is yours and remembers you. Both of these are libraries with a filter argument attached. That is a different product from a companion you author, and it is worth knowing which one you are actually shopping for before you subscribe to either.

Frequently asked questions

Is PolyBuzz better than Character AI?

Neither is better overall; they win on different things. Character.AI has the bigger library, a stronger free tier and one flat $9.99 monthly price, but prohibits explicit content. PolyBuzz filters far more loosely and generates images, but stacks coin bundles on top of a $9.90 to $29.90 subscription. Pick by whether the filter or the floating bill bothers you more.

Is PolyBuzz the same as Poly.AI?

Yes. PolyBuzz is the rebranded name of the Poly.AI character chat app, renamed in late 2024. It is unrelated to PolyAI, the enterprise voice assistant company for contact centers, which causes a lot of confusion in search results. When you read a review, check which one it is actually about.

Does PolyBuzz have a filter?

PolyBuzz is filtered, but much more loosely than Character.AI, and it permits romantic and suggestive content that Character.AI blocks outright. Age is self-declared rather than verified. It is not an unfiltered platform, so if you expect zero guardrails you will still run into them occasionally.

Which is cheaper, PolyBuzz or Character AI?

Character.AI is cheaper and far more predictable: $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, with nothing metered. PolyBuzz's entry tier is comparable at about $9.90 a month, but coin bundles for generated content push the real cost higher, and extended memory requires the $19.90 tier or above. Over a year Character.AI usually wins on price.

Do PolyBuzz or Character AI remember your conversations?

Both remember imperfectly. Character.AI's Story Memory and Facts work within a chat rather than automatically across all your chats, so a new conversation largely resets. PolyBuzz gates extended memory behind its middle tier and above. If persistent long-term recall is your priority, Nomi.ai currently does it best of the mainstream options.
