Muah AI: Is Muah AI Safe, a Muah AI Review, and the Best Muah AI Alternative
We build a competing product, so read this knowing that. The breach record, refund policy and privacy wording below were read on 31 August 2026 from the public breach database and from Muah's own terms, because the review sites ranking for this term mostly copy each other and several of them quote prices that contradict each other. The short answer
Muah AI is a feature-rich, very permissive AI companion platform that was breached in September 2024, exposing 1.9 million email addresses next to the prompts those accounts had written. That is the fact worth knowing before you sign up, and it is on the public record rather than being an accusation. Muah is still running, no second incident has been publicly reported, and for a lot of people the feature set is worth it. What has not happened is a visible refresh of its published commitments: its terms of service and privacy policy both still carry an effective date of 17 May 2022, more than two years before the breach, and the privacy policy sets no data retention period at all. If you want a companion where the billing is a normal card charge you can cancel yourself and the terms were written this decade, that is the case for switching, and it is the product we make.

The public record
The Muah AI data breach, as recorded
This is the single most important thing on this page, so here it is in the breach database's own words rather than ours. Have I Been Pwned is the reference index security teams use, and it carries a record for Muah.AI added on 8 October 2024.
Accounts affected
1.9M
Email addresses, taken alongside the prompts written from those accounts. The pairing is what makes this breach different from a leak of addresses on their own.
When
Sep 2024
Breach dated to September 2024 and added to the public index on 8 October 2024, which is when affected subscribers began receiving notifications.
What was exposed
- AI prompts
- Email addresses
- Sexual fetishes
The three data classes listed on the breach record, word for word.
"In September 2024, the 'AI girlfriend' website Muah.AI suffered a data breach. The breach exposed 1.9M email addresses alongside prompts to generate AI-based images. Many of the prompts were highly sexual in nature, with many also describing child exploitation scenarios."
Two things follow from that, and they point in different directions. The first is the obvious one: an email address next to a sexual prompt is not an anonymous record. Most of the addresses in the set were ordinary personal accounts rather than throwaways, which is why the leak was reported as identifying real people rather than as a routine credential dump. If you have ever had an account there, the safe assumption is that what you typed can be linked back to you.
The second is worth saying plainly because it is easy to lose in the outrage: the existence of appalling prompts in the data set is a fact about the users who wrote them, not evidence that everyone with an account wrote something similar. Most people using companion apps are doing something entirely mundane. The reason the breach matters to a normal subscriber is the exposure, not the company they were unwillingly filed next to.
Being fair about the aftermath: Muah has continued to operate and there is no publicly reported second incident in the roughly two years since. What we could not find is a published incident post-mortem, a remediation timeline, or a security page of the kind a company usually puts up after an event this size. If one exists, it is not linked from the signup flow, the terms or the privacy policy.

Three things in Muah's own policies
Muah's real terms and privacy policy are not at the obvious URLs. They sit at /info/tos.php and /info/pp.php, linked from the small print under the signup buttons. Here is what they commit to, read on 31 August 2026.
1. Both documents are dated 2022
The terms of service and the privacy policy each end with "Effective Date: 5-17-2022". That is more than two years before the September 2024 breach, and neither has been redated since. This is a fact about the documents rather than a claim about the engineering behind them, but published commitments are the only thing a prospective customer can actually check.
2. No retention period, anywhere
The privacy policy has no data retention section. There is no stated period after which chats are deleted, no deletion timeline, and no commitment to encrypt stored conversation content. Its security clause promises "reasonable security measures" and adds that they "cannot guarantee the absolute security of your information", which is standard language but is the whole of it.
3. Purchases are "NOT refundable"
Their capitalization, not ours. Support can grant a one-time partial or full refund "upon good faith of the consumer and given special circumstances", so it is a favor rather than a right. File a chargeback without contacting them first and the terms say Muah "shall enact upon our zero refund stance, and will counter-dispute with ALL acting evidence."
One smaller detail says a lot about how closely these documents are maintained. The complaints procedure sets out real, specific service levels: complaints acknowledged within 2 business days, resolved within 7, appeals accepted within 5 days of a decision. Then the sentence describing when you hear the outcome of an appeal reads "within [X] business days". The template placeholder is still there, live, on the terms page you agree to at signup.
Two points in Muah's favor, because a comparison page that only finds faults is not worth reading. The age floor is 18 in both documents, and the privacy policy commits to suspending accounts proven to belong to anyone younger. And the complaints process, placeholder aside, is more concrete than most services in this category bother to write down: a named contact address, an acknowledgment window, a review team and an appeals route to an independent committee.
Getting in, and what it costs
Muah AI pricing, and why we will not quote one
Muah does not show a price to anyone who is not logged in. Its pricing page loads a JavaScript shell and renders no plans without an account, and every route into the site currently passes through a Cloudflare waiting room first. Checked twice on 31 August 2026, roughly a minute apart, both attempts landed on "Hang Tight! Due to overwhelming demand, please wait while waiting in line" at queue positions 938 and 870. The number goes down, so it is a real queue rather than a broken page, and it explains why "muah ai down" and "muah ai not working" are two of the most common things people type after the brand name.
That leaves the price. We could copy a figure from a review site, but those sites do not agree with each other: the entry tier is quoted as $9.99 a month in some places and $19.99 in others, with higher tiers ranging into three figures. Publishing a number we cannot verify would be worse than publishing none, so here is the honest version: check the price inside your own account before you subscribe, and remember that the terms make what you pay non-refundable by default. There is a free tier and a demo chatroom that works without a login, so you can evaluate the product itself at no cost first.
Our own prices are on the pricing page where a logged-out visitor can read them, which is the standard we think this category should hold itself to. The free tier is 25 messages a month, paid plans run from $9.99 to $34.99 a month billed yearly, and long-term memory is included on every paid tier rather than reserved for the top one.
Head to head
Best Muah AI alternatives, compared honestly
Policies and prices as of August 2026. They change, so check before you subscribe. Where Muah beats us this table says so, and on breadth of features it clearly does.
| Platform | Price (US, 2026) | Known breach | Terms last dated | Memory | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muah AI | Free tier. Paid price not shown to logged-out visitors; review sites disagree. | Yes. Sep 2024, 1.9M emails plus prompts. | 17 May 2022, both documents. | Present, and improves on paid tiers. | The widest feature set here: images, voice, calling, an Android APK, very few content limits. |
| Aroused | Free tier: 25 messages a month. Paid $9.99 to $34.99/mo billed yearly ($12.99 to $49.99 monthly), published publicly. | None reported. | Current, and linked in the footer. | Persistent long-term memory on every paid plan, not gated to the top tier. | One companion you designed yourself who remembers your life, billed to a card you can cancel. |
| Nomi.ai | Free tier with limits. Standard $15.99/mo or $99.99/yr. | None reported. | Current. | The category's strongest. Recalls details from 1,000+ messages back. | The longest memory available, and several companions at once. |
| Character.AI | Free tier; c.ai+ $9.99/mo or $94.99/yr. | None reported. | Current. | Story Memory and Facts, but per chat rather than automatic across chats. | The biggest curated library with zero setup, if a strict filter is acceptable. |
| Chub AI | $20/mo flat, cryptocurrency only. No card accepted. | None reported. | 15 May 2026. | Depends entirely on the model and context window you configured. | The largest character card library anywhere, if you enjoy managing the stack. |
Breach column reflects incidents recorded in the public Have I Been Pwned index as of 31 August 2026. "None reported" means no public record, not a guarantee. Chub, Nomi and Character.AI figures were read first-hand for our Chub AI comparison and Character.AI comparison.
Being fair about it
Where Muah genuinely wins
Muah did not get to this size by being bad. If you are weighing it up, these are the reasons to stay, and we do not match all of them.
Breadth of features
Its own homepage sells the whole set in one line: "Chat, exchange photos, voice, video, and more". Real-time calling on the upper tiers is a genuinely unusual feature, and very few competitors ship it at all.
A very low bar to trying it
The demo chatroom works with no login at all, and there are four ways to sign up including phone and Discord. You can form an opinion in a couple of minutes without handing over anything.
An Android install
Muah distributes an APK from its own site. Side-loading has real trade-offs, no store review and no automatic updates, but a native Android install is more than most browser-only competitors offer, and we do not have an app either.
Very few content limits
Its terms frame Muah as "solely an AI processing service provider that processes data based on user input", which is about as permissive a posture as a hosted service takes. If a filter is what drove you off another platform, this is the draw.
A written complaints process
Placeholder and all, it sets out acknowledgment in 2 business days, resolution in 7, and an appeals route. Plenty of larger services in this category do not publish anything comparable.
An active community
A public subreddit and Discord are linked from the homepage. When something breaks, somewhere to ask is worth a surprising amount, and it is where most of the practical troubleshooting for the service happens.
Straight answer
Which one you should pick
Stay on Muah if
- You want images, voice and phone calls from one subscription and are willing to trade privacy assurances for that breadth.
- Content freedom is the single thing you are optimizing for.
- You want it installed on an Android phone rather than run in a browser tab.
- You are comfortable using a throwaway email address and never typing anything you would mind seeing attached to it.
Switch to us if
- The 2024 breach is a dealbreaker and you want a service whose published terms are current.
- You want to see the price before you make an account, and cancel from your own settings without emailing anyone.
- You want one companion you designed, who remembers what you told her weeks ago, rather than a gallery of everyone else's.
- You would rather wait for a feature to ship than have it shipped without the plumbing behind it.
We are not the answer for everyone leaving Muah. If deep memory across months is the thing you care most about, Nomi is better at it than we are and we say so on our best AI companion roundup. If you were drawn to Muah by the image and video generation, none of the memory-first products, ours included, will replace that. What we are good at is one companion, built the way you want, on a plan you can read the price of and cancel yourself.
Questions people actually ask
Muah AI FAQ
Is Muah AI safe?
Muah AI has a documented breach in its history. Have I Been Pwned records that in September 2024 the site "suffered a data breach" that "exposed 1.9M email addresses alongside prompts to generate AI-based images", with the compromised data classes listed as AI prompts, email addresses and sexual fetishes. The record was added on 8 October 2024. No second incident has been publicly reported since. Muah is usable today, but treat anything you type there as potentially linkable to your email address.
What happened in the Muah AI data breach?
In September 2024 an attacker took a database containing 1.9 million email addresses paired with the prompts those accounts had written. Because the prompts sat next to real email addresses, the leak identified people alongside intensely private material. Have I Been Pwned added the breach on 8 October 2024 and categorizes the exposed data as AI prompts, email addresses and sexual fetishes.
How much does Muah AI cost?
Muah does not publish a price to a logged-out visitor. Its pricing page renders nothing without an account and currently sits behind a Cloudflare waiting room. Third-party review sites contradict each other on the entry tier, quoting both $9.99 and $19.99 a month, so we are not going to repeat a number we cannot verify. Check the price inside your own account before you subscribe.
Does Muah AI give refunds?
Its terms of service say purchases are "NOT refundable". Support can grant a one-time partial or full refund "upon good faith of the consumer and given special circumstances", so it is discretionary rather than a right. The terms also warn that against a chargeback filed without contacting support first, Muah "shall enact upon our zero refund stance, and will counter-dispute with ALL acting evidence."
Why is Muah AI down or not working?
Most of the time it is not down, it is queued. Muah sits behind a Cloudflare waiting room that shows "Hang Tight! Due to overwhelming demand, please wait while waiting in line" along with your position in the line. Checked twice on 31 August 2026, the queue stood at positions 938 and 870 about a minute apart, so it does move. You wait rather than get an error.
How do I delete my Muah AI account?
Muah's privacy policy gives you "the right to access, update, correct, or delete your personal information" and directs requests to [email protected]. Subscriptions can be canceled in the settings page or through your payment provider. Note that the policy sets no retention period and no deletion timeline, so ask for written confirmation that chat content, not just the account record, has been removed. If you want the broader version of this problem, we wrote about what companion apps keep on you.
What is the best Muah AI alternative?
It depends what you are leaving for. If the concern is privacy history, pick a service with current published terms and ordinary card billing you can cancel yourself; ours starts at $9.99 a month billed yearly with memory on every paid plan. If you want the deepest long-term memory, Nomi is the category leader. If you want the largest character library with no setup, Character.AI, though it is heavily filtered.
Is Muah AI free?
There is a free tier and a demo chatroom that needs no login, so you can try it without paying. The paid tiers unlock the parts most people actually want, including higher-quality generation and calling. Because Muah shows no price to logged-out visitors, budget for the fact that you will only see the real cost after creating an account.
Does Muah AI have an app?
Muah distributes an Android APK directly from its own site rather than through Google Play, linked from its homepage. Side-loading an APK means you are trusting the file and the site rather than a store review process, and you will not get automatic updates the way a store install would. There is no equivalent iOS install; on iPhone you use the site in a browser.
Is Muah AI uncensored?
Muah markets itself on a very high degree of freedom and its terms position it as "solely an AI processing service provider that processes data based on user input", placing responsibility for generated content on the user. It does run a complaints process, sets an 18 and over age floor, and suspends accounts proven to be under 18. So it is permissive rather than unmoderated.
Can I pay for Muah AI with a credit card?
Muah takes ordinary payments rather than crypto only, which is a genuine advantage over Chub AI, and its terms reference canceling "within muah ai settings page or payment provider". Worth knowing before you enter a card anywhere in this category: billing descriptors, refund rights and cancellation routes vary a lot, and we compared them across the main platforms in our guide to AI companion apps that accept credit cards.
