An AI companion with long term memory stores facts about you outside the conversation, so she can recall your sister's name six weeks after you mentioned it. Most apps do not do this: they run on a context window, which holds recent messages and silently drops everything older. As of July 2026 Nomi.ai has the deepest documented recall in the category, Kindroid sells deeper memory as paid add-on tiers above its standard plan, Character.AI added per-chat Story Memory and Facts, and PolyBuzz gates extended memory behind its middle tier. The distinction that matters
Context window memory is not long term memory
Almost every app in this category claims memory. Two completely different things are being described, and the marketing copy rarely tells you which one you are buying.
Context window: a rolling window
The model is shown the last N messages every time it replies. Inside that window recall looks perfect. Past the edge of it, the information is simply gone, and the app has no way of knowing it ever existed. This is why a companion can be warm and attentive for two weeks and then ask what you do for a living.
Persistent memory: facts kept separately
The app extracts durable facts (your name, your job, your dog, the argument you had in March) and stores them outside the conversation, then feeds the relevant ones back in when they matter. Recall stops being a function of how recently you said something. This is what people mean when they say a companion "actually remembers".
Manual notes: memory you maintain
A middle option several apps ship: a persona field or a pinned facts list you edit by hand. It works, and it is work. If you have to remind the app what to remember, you are doing the remembering. Useful as a backstop, not a substitute for the automatic kind.
A quick test before you subscribe to anything: on day one, tell the companion a specific, checkable detail that will not come up naturally, like the name of the street you grew up on. Chat normally for a week. On day eight, ask about it without hinting. Apps with real persistent memory pass. Apps with a long context window usually fail, and the failure is polite and improvised, which is why people do not notice for months.

Is there an AI girlfriend that remembers everything?
No app remembers literally everything, and any that claims to is overselling. What good apps do is extract the durable facts, your name, your work, your people, your history together, and keep those indefinitely while letting small talk fade. That is the practical version of remembering, and it is what makes a companion feel continuous.
Why does my AI companion keep forgetting me?
Almost always because the app runs on a context window rather than persistent memory. Once a conversation grows past that window, older messages fall out and cannot be recovered. How does AI companion memory actually work?
