That is the whole difference from a traditional dating sim: a dating sim is authored content you consume and eventually finish, while an AI girlfriend game is an improvisation you co-create and cannot run out of. The catch worth knowing before you pay for one is that generated does not mean remembered. Most simulators keep only a rolling context window, so after a few hundred messages the early part of your relationship quietly drops off the end.

A large share of everyone searching this phrase is not shopping for a companion at all. They are trying to find one particular free download from 2023, and most of what is written about it online is out of date.
What it actually is
Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator, subtitled With You Til The End, is an escape room horror game published on itch.io on 26 March 2023 by DGSpitzer, vivyhasadream and AlterStaff. You are locked in a room with an obsessive cat girl and you have to talk or puzzle your way out. It was built as a proof of concept for ChatGPT driven characters, and the developers have confirmed there will be no further updates.
- Free to download, not free to run. It ships on a name your own price listing, but it will not start until you paste in your own OpenAI API key. Every message you send is billed to your OpenAI account, not to the developer.
- Desktop only. Windows, macOS and an experimental Linux build. There is no Android APK, no iOS version and nothing that runs in a browser, whatever the download sites tell you.
- It does not work offline. The character is a call to a remote model. No connection, no girlfriend.
- It is not on Steam. The Steam product is a different, paid Early Access game from the same team called AI2U: With You 'Til The End, with more characters and a fuller story.
- It is horror. Yandere means obsessive to the point of menace. That is the premise, not a warning label somebody added.
So which one do you want?
It is worth being honest with yourself about which of these two you were actually looking for, because they have almost nothing in common beyond the name.
- A short, strange, funny evening. Go and get the itch.io game. It is genuinely inventive and it costs you whatever a few hundred API calls cost. It is also over in an hour or two.

Two caveats worth stating plainly. Replika publishes no prices on its website at all, so any figure you read elsewhere came from one person's in app screen, in one region, on one day. Several platforms in this category layer coins or tokens on top of the subscription for pictures and voice, which is what turns an advertised $14 plan into a $50 month. Treat every price here as check on the day.
