The short answer
Almost every AI girlfriend product is a website rather than a phone app, and that is not an accident. Apple bans overtly sexual apps outright, so anything aiming at adult companionship either lives on the web or ships a heavily sanded down store build. In practice the good ones split into two groups: sites built browser first, where the web version is the whole product (Aroused, Janitor AI, Candy.AI, SpicyChat), and phone apps that also happen to have a web page (Replika, Kindroid, Chai, Talkie, Linky). If you want to use a companion at a keyboard, pick from the first group, because the second group's web build is usually months behind.

The reason nobody tells you
Why AI girlfriend sites exist instead of apps
People often assume the web versions are the cheap option and the "real" product is on the App Store. It is the other way round. The store rules decide what this category is allowed to be.
Apple App Review Guidelines, section 1.1.4
"Overtly sexual or pornographic material, defined as 'explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings.' This includes 'hookup' apps and other apps that may include pornography or be used to facilitate prostitution, or human trafficking and exploitation."
Google Play carries a parallel restriction in its Sexual Content and Profanity policy. Between them, those two rules cover essentially every phone in the United States, which is why a company building anything adult in this space builds a website first and treats the store listing, if it has one at all, as a watered down side door.
What that means when you are choosing
- A store app is a filtered app. If a companion is on the App Store, its content rules are Apple's, not the company's, and they can tighten without warning.
- A web build can be a leftover. Replika's own site labels its browser version "Web App (Legacy)". That word tells you where the engineering goes.
- Browser first is a real advantage. Nothing to install, nothing in your app list, and it works the same on a laptop, a tablet and a phone.

Two caveats worth stating plainly. Replika publishes no prices anywhere on its website, so any figure you read elsewhere came from someone's in app screen in one region on one day. Candy.AI does not show every visitor the same pricing page, and its included token allowance runs out fast, so the real monthly bill floats well above the headline. Treat both as check on the day.

Four things to check on any AI girlfriend site
Does she actually remember?
This is the single biggest difference between sites, and the one marketing pages are vaguest about. Most run on the context window alone, which means once the conversation gets long enough, the earliest part quietly falls off the end. She does not forget dramatically, she just stops referring to things. Ask what happens after a few hundred messages.
What does it really cost?
Watch for token or coin systems layered on top of a subscription. A site can advertise a reasonable monthly price and still bill you three times that, because pictures, voice minutes and custom characters each burn credits. A flat subscription with no consumables is easier to predict, even when the sticker price looks higher.
Where does the data go?
You will type things into a companion that you have told no one else. Read what the privacy policy says about training on conversations, how deletion works, and what appears on your card statement. A site that cannot answer those three plainly has told you something.
Does the tone match you?
The category splits sharply between explicit sites and tasteful ones, and neither is the correct answer for everybody. Pick deliberately. Is there a real AI girlfriend?
