FictionLab AI review and whether Plus or Ultra is worth paying for

5 October 2026 · 8 min read · By the Aroused team

FictionLab is a good AI story platform with an unusually generous free tier: no message cap at all. Plus, at $8.99 a month or $6.99 a month billed yearly, is worth it if you run long scenarios and keep hitting the free tier's 32K context. Ultra, at $24.99 a month, is for heavy users who want reasoning models and scene images. The weak spot is paperwork: the terms name no company, carry no date and refund nothing.

We build a competing product, so weigh this accordingly. Every claim below comes from FictionLab's own web app code, its documentation and changelog, its terms of service and privacy policy, and its Google Play listing, all read on 5 October 2026. We did not buy a plan, so where something sits behind a login we say so.

How much does FictionLab cost?

FictionLab has no public pricing page, but its checkout reads prices from a table built into the web app, and that table is complete. Two paid tiers, three billing terms each:

PlanMonthlyEvery 3 monthsYearly
Free$0$0$0
Plus$8.99$23.97 ($7.99 a month)$83.88 ($6.99 a month)
Ultra$24.99$68.97 ($22.99 a month)$251.88 ($20.99 a month)

If you have read elsewhere that Plus is $7.99 a month, that number has a history. FictionLab's own changelog of 1 July 2025 set Plus at "7.99$ / month" and moved longtime subscribers up from older prices, some from the original $4. Today the monthly plan charges $8.99; $7.99 is now what you pay per month on the quarterly plan, billed as $23.97. Yearly is preselected in the checkout and labeled two months free. Against twelve monthly payments, our arithmetic puts the Plus saving at $24.00 a year and the Ultra saving at $48.00.

On Android you can also pay through the FictionLab AI app, billed by Google Play, which lists the app's in-app items at $8.99 to $26.99. There is no FictionLab app in the US App Store. Gift codes add time to an account. The full price ladder and what each tier unlocks are laid out on our FictionLab alternative page.

Is FictionLab free?

Yes, and more genuinely than most. The free tier has no message limit. What it caps is the quality of the machinery: 32K of context (how much of the story the AI can hold in view at once), 70B-parameter models, three models to choose from, 100 memory notes, 1,000-character messages and 20 image credits a month. For short scenes that is plenty. For a story you have been running for weeks, the context and memory limits are what you will feel first.

Is FictionLab Plus worth it?

For a regular user, probably yes. Plus raises context to 131K, unlocks 685B-parameter models and seven models (plus a rotating limited one), lifts memories to 500 and makes them more detailed, allows 10,000-character messages and unlimited character slots, and gives 200 image credits. At $6.99 a month on the yearly plan it is one of the cheaper paid tiers in AI roleplay. The honest test is simple: if your stories drift and forget things after a few dozen turns, Plus fixes the thing that is bothering you. If they do not, stay free.

Buy monthly first. The yearly plan is the better price but, as the refund section below shows, you cannot get unused months back if you change your mind.

Is FictionLab Ultra worth $24.99?

Only for heavy users. Ultra launched on 24 May 2026 and adds three reasoning models (FictionLab names Eclipse, Paragon, built on DeepSeek V4 Pro, and Lumina, built on Xiaomi MiMo V2.5 Pro), in-chat image generation with 400 credits a month, an interactive map of your story's memories and lore, a lore engine that writes cards as you play, and moving backgrounds. That is nearly three times the price of Plus for better writing on demanding scenes and pictures of them. If you do not already know you need reasoning models, you do not.

Is FictionLab AI safe?

In practice it looks careful. Mature content sits behind an 18+ confirmation, moderation runs a three-strike system, the Android app is rated Adults only 18+ with 4.25 stars from 3,205 ratings, and the privacy policy says FictionLab does "not engage in advertising". We found no ad pixel in the site's code, which is rarer in this category than it should be.

On paper it is thinner. Four points are worth knowing before you pay:

  • No named company. Neither the terms nor the privacy policy names a legal entity, an address or a governing law. Both say only "FictionLab". Support is [email protected].
  • No dates. The terms promise to show "the date these terms were last revised" at the top. On 5 October 2026 neither document showed any date, so the "as of the date of this Policy" in the no-advertising line has nothing to anchor to.
  • A second AI service. FictionLab's docs say story memories are "generated by a different AI model with a separate provider", so your chat text passes through a service other than the chat model.
  • Lookalikes. fictionlab.org calls itself "FictionLab AI - AI Girlfriend Chat" and shows $14 and $29 plans that exist on no FictionLab page; it never links to fictionlab.ai. The real paid tiers are named Plus and Ultra.

Can you get a refund on FictionLab?

Generally no. The terms say that, except where the law requires otherwise, "all Subscription Fees are non-refundable", with no refunds or credits for "partially used billing periods, unused portions" of a plan, downgrades or tier changes. They also let FictionLab remove, replace or "degrade" any model or feature of a plan without notice and without a refund, and raise the price from your next renewal. None of that is unusual in this category, but it is the reason to start monthly. Purchases made in the Android app fall under Google Play's refund rules instead.

Who owns the stories you write on FictionLab?

You do, with a large caveat. The terms say you own your scenarios and the text and images they generate for you, and in the same breath grant FictionLab a "perpetual, irrevocable" license to use, modify and commercialize all of it. A public scenario that becomes popular may stay online even after you delete your account. If you play on FictionLab partly to draft fiction you later want to publish, keep your own copies, and when you turn a transcript into a finished story you will want to rewrite machine-sounding passages in your own voice rather than post the raw roleplay.

What FictionLab does better than us

Plenty, and it is fair to say so. Unlimited free messages beat our one-time 25 message demo outright. Its monthly Plus price, $8.99, is lower than our $12.99 Spark plan. It offers model choice, lore, multi-character scenes and images, none of which we do. If you love building worlds and steering plots, FictionLab is the better tool, and our best roleplay AI guide lists its closest rivals.

What we built is narrower. Aroused is one companion you design, adults only, warm and flirtatious but never explicit, who remembers you between conversations without memory cards to pin or context limits to manage. Every plan is on our pricing page before you sign up: from $12.99 a month, or $6.50 a month billed yearly, which is slightly below FictionLab Plus on the same term.

Who should pay for FictionLab and who should look elsewhere

Pay for Plus if you write long scenarios several times a week and the free tier keeps forgetting your plot. Pay for Ultra only if you already know reasoning models and in-chat images matter to you. Stay free if your scenes are short. Look elsewhere if what you really want is not a story but a person: one companion who knows your name, your week and your jokes, and is there when you come back. That is a different product, and it is the one on our FictionLab alternative page.

The verdict

FictionLab is a capable, ad-free story platform with the most generous free tier we have reviewed, and Plus is fairly priced at $8.99 a month or $83.88 a year. Before paying, know that the monthly price is no longer the $7.99 most reviews quote, that nothing is refundable, and that the legal pages name no company and carry no date. Start with one month, pay at fictionlab.ai or in the Google Play app, and keep copies of anything you write.
