FictionLab Alternative and FictionLab AI Pricing from its own checkout

We make a competing product, so weigh this accordingly. FictionLab is free with no message cap, and its checkout charges $8.99 a month for Plus and $24.99 a month for Ultra, less on quarterly and yearly terms. Every figure below comes from FictionLab's own code and documents, read on 5 October 2026.

The short answer

FictionLab (fictionlab.ai) is a free AI story and scenario roleplay platform with paid Plus and Ultra tiers. Plus costs $8.99 a month or $83.88 a year; Ultra costs $24.99 a month or $251.88 a year. The free tier has no message limit, and paid tiers buy bigger models, longer context and more memories.

It is a strong product for people who write long, many-character stories. It is a different product from a companion: you run scenarios rather than build a relationship with one person who knows you. If the second is what you are after, that is what we built.

FictionLab pricing for Plus and Ultra

Six prices and one that review sites get wrong

FictionLab has no public pricing page. The prices live in a table inside its web app's code, which is what its checkout reads when you pick a plan. Two tiers, three billing terms each, in dollars and euros at the same numbers.

Most review sites say Plus is "$7.99 a month". That figure has a real origin: FictionLab's July 2025 changelog moved Plus to "7.99$ / month". Today's checkout bills the monthly plan at $8.99, and $7.99 is what you pay per month only when you are billed every three months. If you want the $7.99 rate, pick the quarterly plan and expect a $23.97 charge.

The yearly box says you get two months free. On Plus our arithmetic says you save $24.00 against twelve monthly payments, a bit better than two months. On Ultra you save $48.00, a bit under two.

Recreated from the price table in FictionLab's web app code, 5 October 2026. Yearly is preselected in the real picker and badged "Best Value".

FictionLab Plus and Ultra prices by billing term, with the saving against monthly billing
Plan Charged Per month Saving vs monthly (our arithmetic)
Plus, monthly$8.99 a month$8.99Baseline, $107.88 over a year
Plus, quarterly$23.97 every 3 months$7.99$3.00 a quarter, 11%
Plus, yearly$83.88 a year$6.99$24.00 a year, 22%
Ultra, monthly$24.99 a month$24.99Baseline, $299.88 over a year
Ultra, quarterly$68.97 every 3 months$22.99$6.00 a quarter, 8%
Ultra, yearly$251.88 a year$20.99$48.00 a year, 16%

Paying through the Android app is billed by Google Play, which lists FictionLab's in-app items at $8.99 to $26.99, so the Play price for a plan can differ from the web. Gift codes in the form FL-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX add subscription time. There is no FictionLab app in the US App Store; on iPhone you use the website.

FictionLab free vs Plus vs Ultra

You pay for a bigger brain, not more messages

FictionLab's documentation lists every difference between the tiers, which is more openness than most of this category offers. Free use is not metered by message. What changes is how much the AI can hold in mind at once (its context), which models you can pick, and how many memory notes it keeps.

Memories are short summaries written automatically every 30 messages. When you hit the cap, the oldest unpinned ones are deleted to make room. The docs add that these summaries are "generated by a different AI model with a separate provider", so your story passes through a second AI service, not only the chat model.

FictionLab refunds, terms and privacy

Read the terms before the yearly plan

The yearly plan is preselected and is the best deal, which makes the refund terms matter. Here is what the two legal pages say, quoted where it counts.

Refunds

"All Subscription Fees are non-refundable", except where the law requires otherwise. No refunds or credits for "partially used billing periods, unused portions", downgrades or tier changes.

What a plan guarantees

A subscription is access to whatever FictionLab offers "at any given moment". It may remove, replace or "degrade" any model or feature without notice, and that never entitles you to a refund.

Price changes

FictionLab may raise prices "for any other reason". A new price applies from your next renewal. It has done this before: in July 2025 longtime subscribers were moved up from older rates, some from $4.

Who you are dealing with

Neither document names a company, an address or a governing law. The terms promise to show a revision date at the top; on 5 October 2026 they showed none, and neither did the privacy policy.

Your stories

You own your scenarios and what they generate, and you grant FictionLab a "perpetual, irrevocable" license to use them commercially. A popular public scenario may be kept online after you delete your account.

Moderation

The app tracks warnings as "Strikes: n of 3", and banned accounts are sent to a ban page. Deleting your account ends any subscription on it, and inactive accounts may be closed.

In fairness, two things count in FictionLab's favor. The privacy policy says it does "not engage in advertising", and we found no ad pixel in the site's code. It also publishes its tier limits openly, which most rivals do not. The catch is that the policy says this "as of the date of this Policy", and the policy carries no date.

FictionLab app and lookalike sites

One real address, one confusing copy

"FictionLab" gets about 22,200 US searches a month, and at least one other site uses the name to sell something different. The real service is fictionlab.ai. On Android it is "FictionLab AI" from the developer "FictionLab", rated Adults only 18+, 4.25 stars from 3,205 ratings and over 100,000 installs.

If a page shows you a FictionLab "Premium" for $14, you are not on FictionLab. Its paid tiers are called Plus and Ultra.

FictionLab vs Aroused

A story engine or one companion who knows you

FictionLab is built for scenarios: you write a setting, lore and a cast, play your own character, and steer a plot over thousands of messages. Aroused is one companion you design, adults only, warm and flirtatious but never explicit, where the point is that she remembers your week, not the plot of chapter nine. Where FictionLab does more, the table says so.

Stay on FictionLab if

  • → You write long stories with lore, a cast and a plot, and you enjoy steering them.
  • → Unlimited free messages matter more to you than anything else.
  • → You want to pick between many models, reasoning ones included, or generate scene images.

Switch to us if

  • → You keep restarting scenarios when what you want is one person who remembers you between nights.
  • → You would rather design your own companion once than write a new setup every time.
  • → You want the price and the refund rule in front of you before you hand over an email address.
  • → Managing context limits, memory cards and pinned notes feels like work rather than company.

People who play scenarios on FictionLab usually compare the other roleplay platforms too. Our best roleplay AI guide, Character AI alternative and SpicyChat comparison read those the same way, and the best AI companion roundup puts them side by side. Questions people ask first

FictionLab, answered

How much is FictionLab Plus?

$8.99 a month, $23.97 every three months ($7.99 a month) or $83.88 a year ($6.99 a month), per the price table in FictionLab's checkout code on 5 October 2026. The "$7.99 a month" quoted on review sites is the quarterly rate, or the monthly price announced in July 2025.

How much is FictionLab Ultra?

$24.99 a month, $68.97 every three months ($22.99 a month) or $251.88 a year ($20.99 a month). Ultra launched on 24 May 2026 with reasoning models, in-chat image generation, 400 image credits a month and an interactive memory map.

Is FictionLab free?

Yes, and the free tier has no message cap, which is unusual. The limits are 32K of context, 70B models, three models to choose from, 100 memories and 1,000-character messages. Paying lifts those limits rather than unlocking more messages.

Is FictionLab safe?

It runs an 18+ confirmation, a three-strike moderation system and, by its own policy, no advertising. The gaps are on paper: its terms and privacy policy name no company, address or governing law, carry no date, and grant a perpetual license to your scenarios and their output.

Can I get a refund from FictionLab?

Generally no. The terms make all subscription fees non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise, with no refunds for partial periods, unused time, downgrades or tier changes. If you paid through the Android app, Google Play's own refund rules apply.

Does FictionLab have an app?

On Android, yes: "FictionLab AI" on Google Play, rated Adults only 18+, with over 100,000 installs. There is no FictionLab app in the US App Store, so on iPhone you use fictionlab.ai in the browser. Plans bought in the Android app are billed by Google Play.

Who owns FictionLab?

We could not find out. Neither the terms nor the privacy policy names a company or an address, and both refer only to "FictionLab". The Google Play developer is listed as "FictionLab", and the contact address is [email protected].

What is the best FictionLab alternative?

For long scenario roleplay with free unlimited messages, FictionLab is built for that and we are not. For one companion you design who remembers you, adults only, with every price published before signup, that is us: a one-time 25 message demo, then from $6.50 a month billed yearly.
