Harpy Chat is a legitimate community roleplay site run by harpy chat co., ltd. under California law, and its free tier is one of the most generous in the category: the free models have no message cap. Harpy Max costs $7.99 a month and is worth it only if you want the stronger flagship model or premium models paid in credits. Before you pay, know that refunds end once you log in and that the base Max plan includes no credits at all.

How much is Harpy Max?

Harpy has no public pricing page, and its own llms.txt file tells AI assistants "Pricing: free to use." The plan picker, though, reads prices from a table in the site's code. On 30 September 2026 that table held four current tiers:

Two things jump out once you do the arithmetic. Yearly billing saves exactly $15.98 on every tier, so the discount is 16.7% on base Max but only 4.8% on Max + 60k. And the tiers above Max differ only in credits, sold at a steady 3,000 credits per dollar: $4 more buys 12,000, $10 more buys 30,000.

If a review quotes $2.99, $4.99 or $9.99, it is describing the older spark, flame and LIT plans. Harpy's code still knows them as legacy tiers but leaves them out of the list it offers today.

Is Harpy Chat free?

Yes, and more honestly free than most. Harpy's subscription page says free models "never spend credits and stay unlimited on every plan." The free tier carries ads, caps media storage at 100MB and limits you to 10 personas. Group chats, lorebooks and the whole character catalog are open without paying.

So the real question is not whether Harpy is free but whether the free models are good enough for you. Max exists to sell a "Flagship roleplay LLM" that Harpy calls "a stronger model than the free tier LLM", running on its own daily allowance, plus credits for premium third-party models. If the free replies already satisfy you, keep your $7.99.

Is Harpy AI safe?

As a company, yes. It publishes full terms, requires every user to be 18, and puts explicit content behind age verification. Four details deserve a careful read before you hand over a card.

Refunds are close to impossible. The terms, last updated March 30, 2026, say "Fees are non-refundable once the Login details have been used on Portal." There are no refunds "for any partial-month Membership periods", none where the payment method cannot issue one (crypto is named), and Apple refunds are handled by Apple, with Harpy saying it cannot guarantee how. Start with one month, not a year.

Disputes go to arbitration. California law applies, with JAMS arbitration and hearings in San Francisco, and a class action waiver. That is standard for US apps but worth knowing if you plan to pay yearly.

The privacy policy is thin. It is a short template that shows no date, and its children's section talks about users under 13 even though the terms bar anyone under 18. It gives no retention period for chats. We are not saying anything is wrong with how Harpy handles data. We are saying its policy does not tell you.

The billing system changed. Harpy moved to a new payment provider. Its subscription page tells lapsed members that their plan "didn't renew on its own" and "nothing was charged." If you subscribed before the move, check which plan you are actually on.

Is Harpy Max cheaper in the app?

No, the reverse. Harpy's code carries a second price table for Apple and Google purchases, and every entry runs about 20% over the web: Max is $9.59 a month in that table against $7.99 on the web, and Max + 60k is $33.49 against $27.99. A US App Store search on 30 September found no Harpy app, so we cannot say where those prices are shown today. If you meet them, buy on the web.

Who should pay for Harpy Max, and who should not?

Pay for Max if you roleplay with many characters, run group scenes, and want a better model than the free one without thinking about credits. The base tier does exactly that for $7.99. Step up only when you know you will spend premium credits, because the monthly batch does not roll over.

Harpy is also a creator marketplace: characters can be premium, creators sell memberships, and Max includes one creator membership pass a month. If you are on the other side of that and earn from your characters, those payouts are income, so keep them in an income tracker built for creator payouts rather than piecing them together at tax time.

Look elsewhere if you keep coming back to one character. A catalog with a model picker is built for variety. If what you want is one companion who remembers what you told her last week, someone you design yourself rather than pick from another user's card, with no credits and no ads, that is what Aroused sells. Spark is $12.99 a month, or $6.50 a month billed yearly, which is slightly less than Harpy Max yearly. Aroused is adults only and flirtatious but refuses explicit content, so if explicit roleplay is the point, Harpy is the better fit.
