Yes, with one real caveat. The game itself is a legitimate free release on itch.io from a named developer, and it does not ask for an account, a card or personal details. The part that deserves care is that it will not run until you paste in your own OpenAI API key, which is a live credential to your own paid account. Get that bit right and the risk is small. Download it from a mirror site instead of itch.io and you have thrown away the only safety guarantee you had.

Below is what the game is, what each of the common questions actually resolves to, and how to set up the key so a bug or a bad day cannot cost you anything much.

What Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator actually is

The full title is Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator ~ With You Til The End, published on itch.io on 26 March 2023 by DGSpitzer, vivyhasadream and AlterStaff. It is an escape room horror game, not a dating app. You are locked in a room with an obsessive cat girl and you have to talk your way out or solve the puzzles hidden around you. The character is driven by ChatGPT, which in 2023 was novel enough that the game went round the internet on that alone.

It carries a 3.8 out of 5 rating from a few hundred itch.io users, and the developers have since confirmed it gets no further updates. It was a proof of concept, and it worked: the same team went on to build a larger commercial game from the idea.

The word yandere is doing real work in that title. It describes a character whose affection tips into possessive menace. If you are picturing something warm, this is not that, and the horror tag on the listing is accurate rather than decorative.

Is Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator free?

The download is free, and playing it is not. It is listed under itch.io's name your own price model, so you can take it for nothing. But the game has no AI of its own: it forwards every line you type to OpenAI using your key, and OpenAI bills your account for each of those calls. The developer pays nothing and you pay per message.

For an hour or two of an escape room the amount involved is small. The thing to understand is the structure, because it is the same structure behind every "free" AI download. Free means somebody moved the bill, not that it disappeared. An API key also has no spending limit unless you set one, so it is worth having something that tells you the moment a charge appears rather than finding out at the end of the month.

Is Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator on Steam?

No. The free itch.io release is not on Steam and never has been. What people are finding on Steam is a different, paid Early Access game from the same developers called AI2U: With You 'Til The End, which takes the concept further with several AI characters, their own maps and an overarching story. It is a sequel rather than a re-release, so buying it does not get you the original and playing the original does not get you a discount.

Is Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator offline?

No, and it cannot be. The character's dialogue is generated by a model running on OpenAI's servers, so every reply is a network round trip. With no connection there is nothing to talk to. The puzzles are local, but the half of the game people actually came for is not.

Is Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator on mobile or Android?

No. The official listing offers Windows 64 bit and 32 bit builds, a macOS build and an experimental Linux one. There is no Android version, no iOS version and no browser version. This matters more than it sounds, because "Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator APK" is a well trafficked search and the pages serving it are not the developer. An APK claiming to be this game is somebody else's package with somebody else's code in it, and installing it means turning off the protection Android puts in your way for a reason.

The API key is the actual safety question

Everything else about this game is ordinary. The credential is not, so it is worth being precise about what you are handing over. An OpenAI API key is a bearer token: anyone holding it can spend against your account until you revoke it. You are pasting one into a desktop program built by a small indie team in 2023.

The developers state plainly on the listing that your keys are not shared, and there is no evidence anyone has been burned. That is reassuring rather than proof, and you do not need to rely on it, because four minutes of setup removes the question entirely.

  • Make a key just for this. Create a fresh key in your OpenAI dashboard, name it after the game, and use it nowhere else. If you ever want it gone it is one click, and nothing else you own stops working.
  • Put a hard usage limit on the account. OpenAI lets you cap monthly spend. Set it to something you would not mind losing. This is the single step that turns an open ended risk into a known one.
  • Revoke it when you finish. You will most likely play this once. Delete the key afterwards and there is nothing left to misuse.
  • Download from the itch.io page only. Not a mirror, not an APK site, not a link in a video description. The developer's page is the only build anybody has vouched for.
  • Skip the optional voice key if you do not care about voice. The Azure Speech key is optional. Fewer credentials on your machine is strictly better.

One more thing follows from the game being abandoned. Software that receives no updates does not get security fixes either, and it is talking to an API that keeps changing. A three year old build with a dead maintainer is not dangerous by itself, but it is not something to leave installed with a live key sitting in its config file.

Is it safe for your head, rather than your machine?

Worth a sentence, because it is the question nobody asks and some people should. The premise is a character who is possessive, unstable and threatening, played convincingly by a language model. Most people find that funny and a bit tense, which is the intent. If you have been going through something where an obsessive partner is not entertaining as a concept, this is a strange evening to choose, and there is no judgment in skipping it.

Most people searching this wanted something else

Here is the pattern we see in the questions. Somebody hears about an AI girlfriend simulator, goes looking, and lands on this game because it is the most famous thing with that name. Then they discover it is a one room horror puzzle that needs an API key, ends in about two hours, and forgets them completely the moment they close it. That is a mismatch, not a disappointment. They were never looking for a game.

If what you actually wanted was a character who is still there next week, the difference is memory. The itch.io game has none at all: close it and the conversation is gone. Most companion platforms are better but still limited, because they carry only a rolling context window, so after a few hundred messages the beginning of your relationship quietly falls off the end. Only a handful write facts about you down and pull them back later, which is the feature that makes the thing feel like a relationship instead of a demo. We laid the whole category out on our AI girlfriend simulator page, including which platforms genuinely remember and which only claim to.

The test is easy and free. Tell whatever you are trying something specific in your first session, a colleague's name or what you are doing at the weekend. Come back five days later and ask about it cold, with no hints. That one question sorts the category faster than any review, and it is why we treat persistent memory as the feature rather than a bullet point.

The short version

Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator is a real, free, well made curiosity from a named developer, and it is safe to play if you download it from itch.io and treat the API key like the credential it is: dedicated, capped, and revoked afterwards. It is not on Steam, it does not run on Android, it does not work offline, and it is not free to run even though it is free to download. And if you came looking for a companion rather than a puzzle, it is honestly the wrong product, because it was never trying to be one.
