SoulFun AI review: is SoulFun safe, and what does $19.99 a month actually buy?

SoulFun is a working product with no publicly reported breach as of August 2026, and its privacy policy makes one commitment most rivals do not bother to make. The problems are in the fine print rather than the product. Its own documents set the minimum age at 13, place your data and any legal dispute in Hong Kong, state plainly that cancelling never earns a refund, and have not been touched since August 2023. The $19.99 plan is also a coin wallet rather than a flat allowance, which matters more than the headline price.

Everything quoted below comes from SoulFun's own terms of service, privacy policy, subscription terms and content policy, read directly on 24 August 2026. We build a competing product, so read this knowing that, and check the pages yourself before you pay.

What $19.99 a month actually buys

This is the part worth doing arithmetic on, because SoulFun Premium is not a flat message allowance. The subscription terms price the plan at "$19.99 per month" and grant "1000 coins per month", then charge every action out of that same wallet at published rates: "Text messages (1 message costs 1 coin)", "Voice calls (1 min costs 10 coins)" and "Video calls (1 min costs 20 coins)".

One wallet funds all three, so the coins are not additive. Spend them on voice and your text budget shrinks by the same amount. Here is what the month buys if you spend it entirely on one thing:

Fifty minutes of video across a whole month is the number that surprises people. A single twenty minute video call costs 400 coins, which is 40% of the month, and once the wallet is empty the text chat stops too. If you mainly want to talk, the plan is reasonable. If the voice and video features are why you are subscribing, budget for running dry in the first week. The refund and cancellation terms

Two clauses deserve reading before you enter a card. The subscription terms state that "canceling your subscription will not result in a refund for any previously charged fees", with no trial window and no exception for an accidental renewal. You keep access until the end of the cycle you already paid for, and that is the whole remedy.

The second clause is the practical one. To stop the renewal you must "log in to your account and submit a request via Feedback Form", and SoulFun "may need additional information to verify your identity". There is no self-serve cancel button described anywhere in the terms. A cancellation that depends on someone reading a support form is a cancellation with a queue in front of it, and the renewal date does not wait for the queue. If you subscribe, put a reminder a few days before the monthly date rather than trusting the form, and it is worth having something that tells you the moment a recurring charge lands on your statement so a renewal you meant to stop does not go unnoticed for a billing cycle.

Where your data lives, and where you would have to sue

SoulFun is candid about this, which is more than many rivals manage. The privacy policy states that "The content will be stored in remote server in HK" and that "data stored in the HKSAR may be subject to lawful requests by the local courts or law enforcement authorities". You are asked to "explicitly consent" to that transfer as a condition of use.

The terms of service then put the legal forum in the same place. Disputes are "governed by and construed in accordance with the internal laws of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) without giving effect to its conflict of law's provisions, regardless of your location", and are "finally resolved by the courts of HKSAR".

For a US buyer that phrase "regardless of your location" is the whole story. A dispute over a $19.99 charge is not worth a Hong Kong court, so in practice the dispute resolution clause means there is no realistic dispute resolution. It is worth being fair here though: there is no forced arbitration clause and no class action waiver in these terms, and plenty of US-based competitors do include both. Whether a foreign forum or a mandatory arbitration clause is worse depends on what you were planning to do about it, which for most people is nothing.

The age floor is 13, and there is no 18+ rule at all

This is the finding that most changes how you should think about the platform. The children's section of the privacy policy reads: "The Site is not intended for children under 13 years of age", raised to 16 only "for EU residents" because the GDPR requires it. We checked every policy page for any 18+ requirement, any reference to "eighteen", and any adult content gate. There is none. The only mention of the age eighteen anywhere on the site sits inside a fictional character's biography.

The terms of service go further in an odd direction. Rather than requiring adulthood, they ask you to warrant that "You are of the legal age to form a binding contract with us", and then add that "if You are under the legal age, You shall access or use our Services under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian". A clause contemplating supervised minors is a strange thing to find in the terms of a product marketed around AI girlfriends.

The content policy contradicts the product

SoulFun's content policy lists, under prohibited content, "Obscenity & Adult Content: Pornographic or explicit sexual content, including offensive or vulgar language and depictions". Meanwhile the subscription terms sell "Ask for photos" as a Premium benefit and the site's own pricing page is built around flirtatious AI girlfriends.

We cannot resolve that from public documents and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What it means for you as a buyer is simpler than the contradiction suggests: a written policy that bans the thing the product sells is a policy that can be enforced against you at any time. The terms already reserve the right to remove content "in our sole discretion" and to terminate your access "with or without notice to you, for any reason". If you build a character over months, you are building it on a rule the operator has written itself permission to apply whenever it likes.

What SoulFun does well

A review that only lists problems is not much use, so here is the other side, quoted just as carefully. The privacy policy commits that "In no way will we use your photos or facial features for face recognition, as we do not introduce the face recognition technologies or other technical means for the processing of biometric data". It also says photos containing faces "will be deleted automatically once the new video generated".

It names its third party data collector rather than hiding behind a category: Firebase Crashlytics, for crash reporting. No advertising partners are named anywhere, and there is no clause about sharing your conversations with advertisers. You are granted a right to receive your personal data "in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format", and a right to withdraw consent by email. Those are real, and several better known competitors offer less.

The upload license is the usual wide one, worth knowing but not unusual: you grant "an irrevocable, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable, assignable right and license to use any Uploaded content". You keep ownership. They keep a permanent right to use what you upload to run the service.

The documents have not been updated since 2023

Both the terms of service and the privacy policy carry the line "last updated on [8/12/2023]", square brackets included, in the live 2026 versions. The brackets are a template placeholder somebody never filled in, and they are still there three years later.

On its own that is a small thing. Combined with an about page headed "Company Info" that contains an email address and no company, no registered entity anywhere in any document, and a content policy that contradicts the product, it points at a platform that has invested in the app and not in the paperwork. That is common in this category and it is not evidence of bad faith. It does mean that if the service were to disappear, there is no named company to ask about it, which is exactly how the Moemate shutdown went: the app went offline, the export tool sat behind a login for a few weeks, and then the domain stopped resolving entirely. Is SoulFun AI safe?

For an adult who treats it as entertainment, yes, with conditions. There is no reported breach, no advertising partner in the policy, and a real commitment against biometric processing. The risks are contractual rather than technical: your data sits in Hong Kong under Hong Kong jurisdiction, your money is non refundable, your cancellation goes through a support form, and the age floor is low enough that you should assume a mixed audience in any shared space.

Practical advice if you sign up: use an email address you do not use elsewhere, never upload a photo of your face, pay with a method you can stop rather than one tied to your main account, and export anything you care about early instead of assuming it will be there.

Is SoulFun AI free?

There is a free tier, and the coin system is what makes it feel limited rather than a hard paywall. Premium at $19.99 a month is the only subscription described in the subscription terms, and it is the tier that unlocks creating your own characters, asking for photos, and the 1,000 monthly coins. Anything beyond light text chatting runs into the wallet quickly.

Does SoulFun AI have a filter?

On paper, yes, and a strict one. The content policy prohibits pornographic and explicit sexual content outright, along with hate speech, harassment and content promoting self harm. In practice users report a considerably more permissive experience than that document describes, which is the contradiction covered above. Treat the written policy as the version that governs your account if there is ever a dispute.

Can you delete your SoulFun data?

The policy grants the right and describes the route: email the address given in the privacy policy to withdraw consent, and request your data in a machine-readable format. There is no described in-app delete button and no stated retention period, so there is no document telling you how long anything is kept after you ask. Send the request in writing and keep a copy of it.

Who should pick something else

If the appeal is voice and video, the coin math is against you and a flat-rate plan will cost less for the same use.
