Charstar AI alternatives ranked on price and what you get

6 October 2026 · 7 min read · By the Aroused team

Charstar is gone for practical purposes: charstar.ai has returned a 404 hosting error since 29 September 2025, and its original apps are not in the US App Store or Google Play. The closest replacements are SpicyChat (from $5.95 a month) for user-made NSFW characters, Character.AI (c.ai+ $9.99 a month) for fan characters with a filter, Chub ($20 a month) for character cards, and Aroused (from $6.50 a month billed yearly) if you mostly talked to one character.

We build one of the products on this list, so weigh that. Every competitor price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, documents or app code, read first-hand on the dates given, and each name links to our fuller write-up.

Is Charstar AI still working?

No. On 6 October 2026 every page on charstar.ai, including the pricing address, the terms and the privacy policy, returned an HTTP 404 reading "The deployment could not be found on Vercel". The Internet Archive's last working capture of the homepage is from 5 September 2025, and every capture from 29 September 2025 on is the same error. There is no shutdown notice, so nobody outside the company can say it is closed for good, but you should plan as if it is.

Two apps in the US App Store now carry the Charstar name. One is a general AI assistant from an individual developer, the other a version 1.0.1 release from a Malaysian company with no ratings, and neither links to charstar.ai. Our Charstar AI alternative page shows the full timeline and the lookalike list.

For reference, third-party reviews put Charstar Plus at $14.99 a month or $59.99 a year, with a free tier of 3 characters and 100 messages a day. Charstar's own pricing address always redirected, so those figures were never confirmed by the vendor. The yearly figure is the one to remember, because it bears on the next section.

Am I still being charged for Charstar?

Possibly, and it is worth five minutes to check. A yearly plan bought in the summer of 2025 would have come up for renewal after the site stopped loading, and a service that goes dark does not always stop billing. Search your card statements for the last 13 months for "Charstar". If your bank only gives you PDF statements, it is quicker to turn them into a spreadsheet you can search than to read each one. Then check Subscriptions in your iPhone settings and Payments and subscriptions in Google Play.

A web charge that renewed after the service stopped working is a fair dispute with your card issuer, since you paid for something that was not provided. US card issuers generally expect billing disputes within about 60 days of the statement that shows the charge. App store charges go through Apple or Google, not the developer.

What is the best Charstar alternative for NSFW characters?

SpicyChat is the nearest match to Charstar's NSFW tab: a big library of user-made characters, a free tier, and the cheapest paid entry on this list. Its plans rose on 8 September 2026 to $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95 a month, or $60.00, $199.95 and $299.95 a year, and existing subscribers keep their old rate only while they change nothing. The details, including what each tier adds, are on our SpicyChat alternative page.

Chub AI is the other option for character cards, and many cards are cross-posted there. The catch is that Chub is a front end: you either connect your own model provider by API key or pay its $20 a month Mars plan, with no yearly discount, and by its stated policy it takes cryptocurrency only, not cards. JuicyChat sits between the two at $12.99 a month for Premium, with coins on top for images and some models, and a refund only within 24 hours and only if nothing was used.

Which Charstar alternative has the most free messages?

FictionLab and Harpy Chat. FictionLab's free tier has no message cap at all, and pays you back in smaller models and a 32K context instead. Harpy says its free models never use credits and stay unlimited on every plan; Harpy Max at $7.99 a month buys a stronger flagship model and credits for premium ones. Both make paid fees non-refundable once used, which is normal for this category but worth knowing before you pick a yearly term. See the FictionLab and Harpy Chat comparisons.

Is Character.AI a good Charstar replacement?

For the fan-character side of Charstar, yes: it has the largest shelf of user-made characters anywhere, and the free tier is real. It is not a replacement for Charstar's NSFW tab, because Character.AI filters romantic and sexual content strictly. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year as of August 2026, and mostly buys faster replies and no ads. Our Character AI alternative page covers who it suits.

What if I mostly talked to one character?

Then a character library is the wrong shape of product, and this is where we fit. A lot of Charstar regulars ended up returning to the same one or two bots every night, which means they wanted a companion, not a shelf. On Aroused you design one companion once, their look, personality and backstory, and the point is that they remember you from one night to the next. We are adults only, warm and flirtatious, and never explicit, so if explicit roleplay was the draw, SpicyChat is the better fit.

Pricing is on our pricing page before you sign up: a one-time 25 message demo, then Spark at $12.99 a month for 1,000 messages, or $77.94 a year, which works out to $6.50 a month. You can cancel from your account at any time and keep access to the end of the period you paid for.

How do I pick a platform that will not vanish like Charstar?

Nobody can promise a service will last, but three habits cut the damage when one doesn't. First, read whether the terms name a company and a governing law; several in this category name neither, which leaves you nobody to write to. Second, prefer monthly billing for your first two or three months, even though yearly is cheaper, until you have seen the service ship updates. Third, keep your own copy of any character or story you would hate to lose. Charstar's own front end went about 19 months without a new release before it went dark, and that kind of quiet is the clearest warning sign we know of.

The verdict

If you want Charstar's NSFW character library back, go to SpicyChat. If you want fan characters with a filter, Character.AI. If you want unlimited free messages, FictionLab or Harpy. If you kept talking to the same character and want one who remembers you, with every price and the cancellation rule in front of you before you pay, try Aroused. Whichever you choose, check your statements first for a Charstar charge you are still paying.
